気になった表現はstartled awake。

「驚く」を表す表現を他にも調べてみたところ、かなり多くの語彙がヒットした。
・be surprised (at anything)
・be astonished (at anything)
・be amazed (at anything)
・be startled (at anything)
・to be struck (at anything)
・be astounded (at anything)
・marveled (at anything)
・wonder (at anything)
・be shocked (at anything)
・stunned (at anything)
・be flabbergasted (at)
・epater フランス語由来
これらの違いも調べてみる。Merriam-Websterによると、
・surprise, astonish, astound, amaze, flabbergast： 思いがけないことで強制的に影響をあたえることを指す。
・surprise：最も一般的に使われる言葉で、予期していないことによる効果・影響を指す。
・astonish：信じられないほど驚いている状態を指す。
・astound：驚きの衝撃を強調する。
・amaze：当惑した状態を表す。
・flabbergast：驚きと戸惑い、または落胆を示唆することもある。
Merriam-Websterの各単語のページでは、単語のニュアンスの違いが分かりにくいものもあったので、次はMacmillan Dictionaryと併用して意味を確認した。
・be surprised：having the feeling that you get when something unexpected happens
予期しないことが起こったとき全般に使う。(Macmillan)
・be astonished： to strike with sudden and usually great wonder or surprise (Merriam)
圧倒的な衝撃で満たされた驚き、びっくり仰天のニュアンス
・be amazed ：to fill with wonder （Merriam）
あっけにとられる、目を見張るといったニュアンスも含まれる。
・be startled（at anything）：to make a person or animal feel suddenly frightened or surprised by doing something that they do not expect(Macmillan)
あっと驚く、ギクッとした驚きを指す。
・to be struck （at anything）: to affect with a mental or emotional state or a strong emotion （Merriam）
強い衝撃を受けたときに使われる。
・be astounded（at anything）: feeling or showing great surprise or wonder（Merriam）
たまげた、愕然としたといった強い衝撃を表す。
・marvel : 驚く、驚嘆する（at anything）: to become filled with surprise, wonder, or amazed curiosity（Merriam）
不思議なものに対する驚異のニュアンスを含む。
・wonder （at anything）: to admire someone or something and feel surprised by how beautiful or unusual they are (Macmillan)
美しいもの、不思議、奇跡などへの感嘆を表す。
・shocked :very surprised and upset by something bad that happens unexpectedly (Macmillan)
恐怖への驚き、畏怖、狼狽などを表す。
・stun : to shock and surprise someone so much that they cannot react immediately (Macmillan)
驚き、うれしさで唖然としたときに使われる。
・be flabbergasted (at) : to overwhelm with shock, surprise, or wonder（Merriam）
口語で使われる。びっくり仰天、面食らうなどのニュアンス
・epater :(フランス語)〔～を〕びっくりさせる、〔～を〕あっと言わせる（英辞郎）
これはweblio英和辞典や英辞郎ではヒットしたけど、
Merriam-Webster やMacmillanではヒットせず。使う機会はなさそう。
